Upon completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
Understand the etiology of primary infection of the central and peripheral nervous systems by HIV-1, including direct effects of the virus itself as well as indirect effects caused by the immunological response to the virus in the CNS.
Diagnose HIV-1 associated cognitive-motor disorders and develop an appreciation for the limitations of these disorders in terms of targeting treatment needs, which should be expanded to those with neuropsychological impairment without any disorder as well as to the use of neuroprotective agents.
Be aware of the diagnostic work-up for, the etiology of,
and treatment of secondary CNS complications of HIV-1
infection.
Be familiar with the use of psychopharmacological, palliative treatments for HIV-1 infected individuals with neuropsychiatric disease.
familiar with the psychotherapeutic and other non-pharmacotherapeutic interventions that may be indicated for individuals suffering from HIV-1 associated CNS and PNS diseases.
