Training

Upon completion of this module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Understand the etiology of primary infection of the central and peripheral nervous systems by HIV-1, including direct effects of the virus itself as well as indirect effects caused by the immunological response to the virus in the CNS.
  2. Diagnose HIV-1 associated cognitive-motor disorders and develop an appreciation for the limitations of these disorders in terms of targeting treatment needs, which should be expanded to those with neuropsychological impairment without any disorder as well as to the use of neuroprotective agents.
  3. Be aware of the diagnostic work-up for, the etiology of, and treatment of secondary CNS complications of HIV-1 infection.
  4. Be familiar with the use of psychopharmacological, palliative treatments for HIV-1 infected individuals with neuropsychiatric disease.
  5. familiar with the psychotherapeutic and other non-pharmacotherapeutic interventions that may be indicated for individuals suffering from HIV-1 associated CNS and PNS diseases.

Upon completion of this module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the prevalence and types of pain commonly encountered in patients with HIV disease.
  2. Evaluate the nature and extent of the under treatment of pain in AIDS and the barriers to adequate treatment.
  3. Identify principles of basic pain assessment.
  4. Identify the principles of pain management in AIDS, especially the use of non-opioid, opioid and adjuvant analgesics as per the WHO analgesic ladder.
  5. Identify therapeutic approaches for the management of pain in substance abusers with HIV infection.
  6. Identify non-pharmacologic approaches for pain management.

Upon completion of the module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the prevalence and extent of the problem in the HIV positive/AIDS population.
  2. Appropriately diagnose these patients.
  3. Evaluate the suicide risk in this population.
  4. Discuss pharmacologic approaches to these patients with particular attention to the interaction with antiretroviral medications.
  5. Discuss non-pharmacologic approaches to depression.

Upon completion of the module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the prevalence of psychotic symptoms in the HIV positive/AIDS population.
  2. Understand the diagnosis of psychosis in this population.
  3. Understand the implications of psychosis in this population and its differential impact.
  4. Discuss therapeutic approaches including hospitalization and staff safety.

Dr. Knox is available to provide a 1 hour interactive training session designed to prepare participants to identify and analyze ethical issues related to HIV/AIDS.

Upon completion of this training, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify HIV/AIDS ethical issues requiring analysis and thoughtful decision-making.
  2. Understand the principles which must applied to ethical decision-making.
  3. Be aware of the stakeholders in the decision and community perspectives that may influence decisions.
  4. Apply an ethical decision-making model to the ethical issues identified.
  5. Be familiar with the analysis necessary to consider options and reach an appropriate decision regarding ethical issues.
