MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING PROGRAM Program Home | Faculty and Staff | Training | Journal Articles | Additional Resources ProgramThe USF Center for HIV Education and Research, central office of the Florida/Caribbean AETC, operates the “Mental Health Training Program” to increase the number of primary care providers capable of diagnosing and treating mental health and substance abuse disorders among HIV-infected patients. The program offers training on HIV/AIDS and mental health co-morbidities for health care professionals who provide care for HIV-infected patients throughout Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Curricula developed by the American Psychological Association, American Psychiatric Association, and National Association of Social Workers are utilized and tailored to meet the needs of our regional providers. This program is funded by HRSA and SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS). The goals of the program are to increase the number of providers who are able to diagnose and treat both mental health and substance abuse disorders among individuals living with HIV; to disseminate information to providers in multiple formats for a variety of uses; and to provide ongoing support to participating providers in the form of clinical consultation. Training will target health care professionals including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists. The content of the training will focus on neuropsychiatry, mental health/substance abuse/HIV co-morbidity and ethics. A team of highly skilled faculty will travel throughout the region to provide training on specialized topics in mental health and HIV/AIDS. For more information about the trainers and training topics, click here. The training schedule is available. Following these events, training will be scheduled to meet the requests of clinical programs. Training participants’ satisfaction and gains in knowledge will be assessed with immediate post-training questionnaires and pre- and post-test scores, using results to guide future training. Evaluation of the perceived quality of education and training provided at all sites is achieved through a questionnaire, which asks participants to rate the experience in the dimensions of trainers' knowledge, trainer's organization, quality of training, quality of A/V and handout materials and opportunity for interaction. For further information about the training, contact Julie Baldwin, Ph.D., at (813) 974-6692 or jbaldwin@health.usf.edu. To ask a clinical consultation question Click Here |
