Perinatal HIV transmission is preventable 98% of the time, but it does not just happen on its own. It takes education, prenatal testing, proper treatment, and referral to post-natal care and services. It also takes a commitment from providers and consumers to do what is necessary to have a healthy baby. Follow my blog to learn what we are doing in Florida and around the country to meet the challenge.

The Florida ADAP is facing a budgetary crisis that has resulted in the implementation of some cost-containment measures. Beginning June 1, 2010, the Florida ADAP will institute a waiting list to enroll new clients to ensure that enrolled clients can continue therapy without interruption.However, there are some situations where medical exceptions will be granted. All HIV exposed newborns should receive the neonatal ZDV chemoprophylaxis regimen. Once discharged from the hospital, therapy must continue uninterrupted for 6 weeks. In some cases this presents a challenge. Baby RXpress addresses that challenge.

The passage of this legislation has had a significant impact on how HIV/STD testing is conducted. The challenge we face is making providers aware of the changes and the importance of incorporating them into their practice.
