Perinatal Transmission of HIV Can Be Prevented!

Legislation

  • Florida law requires that health care providers conduct routine HIV and STD testing, which shall include at a minimum, chlamydia, hepatitis B, gonorrhea and syphilis for all pregnant women. Women must be informed that the tests will be conducted and they may decline testing.

  • If a woman declines testing, a signed Statement of Objection (for example, Department of Health form 3161) must be attempted.

  • HIV and STD testing must be conducted at the initial prenatal care visit and again at 28 – 32 weeks gestation.

  • If a pregnant woman presents at the Emergency Department after 12 weeks gestation with no prenatal care, the ED must refer her to the local county health department for the needed testing.

  • Women who appear at delivery or within 30 days postpartum with no record of HIV/STD testing, or no record of testing after 27 weeks gestation, shall be tested for HIV and STDs.

Facts

  • About 125,000 Floridians are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

  • Florida is ranked third in the country for total HIV/AIDS cases. And second for total pediatric cases.

  • Of the pediatric cases, 95% were infected by perinatal transmission.

The statistics presented above were provided by the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of HIV/AIDS.

HIV and STD Testing: It can save a baby’s life

  • Treating women protects infants. With appropriate treatment and intervention, perinatal transmission rates can be reduced to less than 2%.

  • Do your part in reducing the incidence of HIV and STD infection in babies -
test all women for HIV and STDs.

  • Call 813-974-4430 today for free training in YOUR office.

Reminder

  • Florida law requires all pregnant women and infants to be screened for Healthy Start to improve birth, health, and developmental outcomes for all babies.
